Find the best flats for rent in Budapest

Budapest is a great city to live in. It has beautiful architecture, lots of green spaces and parks, and a vibrant nightlife that reminds its old name “Paris of the East”.

Budapest is quite easy to get around because it’s a very flat city. The public transport system consists of buses, trams and the metro. There are also boats that travel along the Danube river. To travel within the city you can buy single tickets or day passes at most metro stations or tobacconists (small shops).

Parks and monuments

Budapest has many beautiful parks and monuments that are worth seeing when you are living in the city. The most famous park is Andrássy út (Andrássy Avenue), which is located in the 3rd District near Heroes’ Square.

It’s a long boulevard lined with trees on both sides which was built in 1875 as an access road to the newly built royal palace on top of Castle Hill (Gellért Hill). Today this street is known for its cafés and restaurants as well as its many museums such as the Museum of Fine Arts (Műcsarnok), House of Terror.

What do I need to know before renting an apartment in Budapest?

Budapest is one the best truly vibrant European cities, widely known for excellent universities and very popular among foreign students. Whether you’re moving to Budapest for a new job, as an au pair or for a few months of study abroad, renting an apartment in Budapest is the best way to experience Hungarian life in the capital.

But before you sign any lease, there are a few things you should know that will make your stay in Budapest more pleasant and avoid paying too much for your apartment.

When you are looking for accommodation, you have the option of renting one in a building, therefore you should be aware of somethings

Lifts may not be included and it might be difficult to move heavy furniture up flights of stairs. However, most buildings have elevators nowadays and even older buildings will likely have them installed soon enough due to EU regulations that require all rental properties to include them (this is very important if you are planning on purchasing furniture).

Kitchens tend to be larger in buildings as well - this makes them perfect for families with children as there is more space for play as well as cooking meals together! You can also cook bigger meals which may save money over time.

Apartment rental properties are the most common type of rental property in Budapest. They are typically classified as either a flat or a house and come with an apartment number.

Many places have additional fees each month for using household resources like electricity, gas, water and internet access. If you are signing a contract that requires payment of these costs while they are included elsewhere, it might be better value to rent from another landlord or agency.

When renting a flat in Budapest, it's important to know all details about the area as well as your own needs. Whether you're looking for something central and close to public transport or with more space on a budget, there are many options available. Even though the process can seem overwhelming when starting out, there is always a light at the end of the road and with Spotahome everything is easy peasy!

Where is a safe place to rent an apartment in Budapest?

District I

District I is the most central and historical part of Budapest. District I also remains one of the most expensive areas in town, though you can find great deals if you look hard enough. Located in District I are many famous landmarks such as St Stephen's Basilica (Szent István Bazilika), Heroes' Square (Hősök tere) or Matthias Church (Mátyás Templom). The majority of museums are located here too: Hungarian National Museum, Museum of Fine Arts, Ludwig Museum or House of Terror Museum to name but a few.

District III

Some of the best areas for finding housing are: Rákóczi út, Döbrentei tér, or József körút.

District IV

Apart from being the most central district in Budapest, District IV also has a lot to offer. It's home to many historical buildings, museums, galleries and monuments as well as large companies and universities. The area is full of green spaces where you can relax or take a walk through the beautiful parks. You'll find plenty of nice bars and restaurants on this side of town too.

There are some great choices for renting an apartment in District IV: Váci utca - This street is one of Budapest's most famous shopping streets with tons of shops selling everything from clothes to food to souvenirs! There are also many popular restaurants here too so it's great for dinner dates! Plus there are lots of other things within walking distance such as Heroes' Square which has some incredible artworks.

District V

District V, also known as Buda side, is the best place to rent your flat. It's close to the Danube and has all the amenities you're looking for: restaurants and bars, good transport links and a diverse population.

The area is perfect for families because it has plenty of green spaces including Gellert Hill Park or Margaret Island (Margitsziget) which are famous among locals for their stunning views over Pest. The latter is also home to some great restaurants so if you want somewhere where you can go out with your kids after spending some time together outdoors then this is the place!

For singles or couples on a budget looking for a lively nightlife scene then District V could be just what they need too - there are plenty of pubs around but also some excellent clubs like Budapest Clubbing.

Which district in Budapest is best connected to rent a flat?

In Budapest, the best districts to rent a flat are District V, VII and IX. These districts are located close to the city center and have good public transport connections. In addition, they offer a lot of opportunities for entertainment, restaurants and shopping.

The following areas are also recommended: District X (where the main railway station is located) or XI (which has many shops). If you want to stay in one of these areas but cannot afford to pay high rents there then consider renting an apartment in Pest instead.

Which neighbourhoods in Budapest are the most exclusive?

The most exclusive and sought-after neighborhoods in Budapest include Buda, Óbuda and Pest. These are the neighbourhoods where you’re likely to find flats and studios for rent with amenities such as concierges, shared pools and gyms.

Can foreigners rent an apartment in Budapest?

Yes, foreigners can rent an apartment in Budapest. You need to have a valid passport and visa for Hungary. You also need enough money to pay the rent plus some extras like utility bills and internet fees if applicable. And finally, it’s good if you have a good credit history because landlords will often ask for references from previous landlords before deciding whether or not they want to rent out their property to you.

Showing proof of income—like pay stubs or bank statements; or even having something on hand like references from previous landlords if possible is also advisable.

What documents do I need for renting in Budapest?

When you're ready to rent a flat in Budapest, the first thing you should do is gather all the necessary documentation. This will ensure that everything goes smoothly and you don't have any unexpected delays when it comes time for your new home to be finalized.

Generally speaking, the documents you'll need for renting in Budapest are:

  • Passport or ID card
  • Residence permit (if applicable)
  • Proof of residence (e.g., recent utility bill)
  • Proof of income (e.g., last year's tax return)
  • Proof of health insurance.

Are you a student coming for Erasmus? Then why don’t you look for a room in a shared apartment instead? You won’t need to provide so many documents and if you do it through Spotahome the whole process can be done from your current sofa!
